Dear Forest Lake Community,
The book that I have chosen as the final book of the month for the 2014-2015 school year is called Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, written by Maria Dismondy and illustrated by Kim Shaw. This book was generously donated to Forest Lake by our PTA. This story deals with having the courage to just be you, accepting others for who they are and most importantly, being kind even when others are not.
This book tells the tale of Lucy, a young girl who dares to be different. She has very big curly hair and eats things that most people don’t- like ketchup on toast and spaghetti in a hot dog bun. Her parental figure in the book is her grandfather who teaches her that not everyone likes the same thing and that being different is okay. Lucy knows that even if we are different from others on the outside, we all have a heart with feelings on the inside. Lucy gets bullied at school by a boy named Ralph who makes fun of her because she is different. One day, when Ralph was faced with a problem, Lucy stormed over to him to give him a piece of her mind. Once she got there she realized the opportunity that she was now faced with…….a chance for revenge or a chance to teach Ralph the importance of kindness. I think you will see that she made the right choice.
“This charming story empowers children to always do the right thing and be proud of themselves, even when they are faced with someone as challenging as Ralph.” I look forward to the conversations that we will have with your child about Lucy and the choice that she made at the end of this story.
